Appoint Millennials to Mentor Interns and Apprentices
Paying it forward early and often gives millennials perspective on the investment that others are making in them through mentoring and networking. Entry-level “paying it forward” is a component of programs such as Year Up, a Boston-based program that helps innercity youth make the transition into the workforce by combining career and technical training.15
Leading employers such as Aetna Insurance, cable operator Bright House Networks, and grocer H-E-B16 have created lattices that start in college and technical schools and continue into the student’s first years on the job. These trellises blend internships, apprenticeships, and mentoring to establish relationships between students and employees, then expand after the new grad joins the company full-time, with career-path training, first-level business skills, and peer networking. New hires who prove adept at integrating these experiences are candidates for management training.
